Jonathan Potts is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Science & Health at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the School of the Environment and Life Sciences. He is also associated with the Revolution Plastics Institute, the Institute of the Earth and Environment, and the Centre for Blue Governance. His work centers on coastal and marine resource management, with strong interdisciplinary engagement across environmental science, policy, and public outreach.
His research interests include coastal hazard risk management, marine spatial planning, shoreline management, marine conservation, and public engagement with environmental sustainability. He is particularly interested in how museums and heritage institutions shape public understanding of environmental issues. His expertise contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially those related to sustainable cities, climate action, and life below water.
Recent publications highlight a strong focus on coastal microplastic pollution, citizen science methodologies, stakeholder perceptions, and innovative communication of marine values through performance and arts-based approaches. His work often involves collaborative, transdisciplinary research with stakeholders and communities.
