Jonathan Pinkney

Jonathan Pinkney is a Professor of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Peninsula Medical School (Faculty of Health), University of Plymouth. He also serves as an Honorary Consultant Physician in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Weight Management at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals focused on health and well-being.

Education and Training: Jon completed specialty training at University College London and the University of Bristol. He held a Wellcome Travelling Fellowship at Pennington Research Center, Louisiana State University, and previously served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool and Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry before joining his current position in 2010.

Research Focus: His research spans biomedical and health services studies on obesity, diabetes, and endocrine conditions. Key areas include obesity's environmental/molecular origins, metabolic complications, and innovative treatments. He leads the NIHR-funded Progroup study (group-based behavioral therapy for severe obesity) and co-leads the Earlybird Study, a long-term cohort examining childhood predictors of adult obesity and metabolic disease.

Clincal Expertise: He specializes in general adult endocrinology, hypothalamic/pituitary disorders, obesity management, reproductive endocrinology, and transitional care for children with endocrine conditions. He actively supports patient organizations like the Pituitary Foundation.

Awards/Grants: His NIHR Programme Grant and leadership in major longitudinal studies highlight his research impact. He has been a vocal advocate for recognizing obesity as a treatable clinical condition.
