Ashley H. Shoemaker, MD, MSCI, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, specializing in Pediatric Endocrinology. Her clinical and research work is centered on hypothalamic and genetic obesity disorders, including Prader-Willi syndrome and pseudohypoparathyroidism, with a focus on developing targeted therapies.
Dr. Shoemaker completed her medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins University and a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Her research interests include:
- Hypothalamic obesity and its underlying pathophysiology
- Genetic causes of obesity such as MC4R pathway disorders
- Type 2 diabetes in youth and prediabetes progression
- Energy balance and metabolic responses to pharmacological interventions
- Clinical management of rare endocrine disorders
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on clinical and translational research in pediatric obesity, with an emphasis on pharmacological interventions (e.g., GLP-1 agonists, setmelanotide, diazoxide choline) and metabolic outcomes. Her work frequently appears in high-impact journals such as Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and Obesity.
Scientific awards and recognitions include:
- Vanderbilt Scholar in Diabetes (2012)
- Endocrine Society Early Investigator Award (2016)
Dr. Shoemaker has secured research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Endocrine Fellow Foundation, and the Doris Duke Foundation. She is a member of the EuroPHP Network Consensus Group on Pseudohypoparathyroidism and has contributed to international consensus statements on diagnosis and management of related disorders. Her collaborative work spans multiple institutions and includes mentorship of trainees and fellows. She maintains a research presence through a dedicated lab website focused on pseudohypoparathyroidism.
