Dr Jonathan Pattrick is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Oxford Bee Lab at the University of Oxford, within the Department of Biology. His work focuses on pollination biology, insect-plant interactions, and the biomechanics of floral visits by Hymenoptera (bees, ants, wasps). He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (biomechanics of bee-plant interactions) and an MPhil from the University of St Andrews (chemical ecology of ant-plant interactions). His current research explores how nectar composition and pollinator taste perception influence foraging strategies, with a particular interest in the energetics of pollinator behavior. He also investigates broader applications of pollination science to food security and ecological conservation.
- Education:
- MPhil, University of St Andrews (Chemical Ecology)
- PhD, University of Cambridge (Biomechanics)
His research interests span pollination biology, insect-plant interactions, and the biomechanics of foraging, with a focus on bees and other floral visitors. Recent work examines the role of nectar amino acids in shaping pollinator behavior and the interplay between floral traits and pollinator perception. He also explores the dual functions of plant chemicals (e.g., attracting pollinators while repelling pests).
Key publications highlight his contributions to understanding nectar energetics, pollinator trade-offs, and the mechanics of insect locomotion. His work on the Bee Gym™ grooming device demonstrates practical applications in bee health management. Current projects aim to bridge fundamental ecological research with real-world challenges in agriculture and conservation.
Dr Pattrick collaborates widely, leveraging interdisciplinary approaches to address questions at the intersection of ecology, chemistry, and biomechanics.
