Jonathan Morton

Jonathan Morton is an Associate Professor of French at Tulane University’s Department of French & Italian, within the School of Liberal Arts. He holds a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford (2014) and has held positions at institutions including the University of Oxford, Columbia University, and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. His research focuses on medieval literature’s intersection with philosophy and the history of science, emphasizing topics like medieval cognitive science, allegory, and the representation of time.

Morton’s scholarly contributions include monographs such as *The Roman de la rose in its Philosophical Context* (Oxford UP, 2018) and *Engines of Invention: Thinking Machines in the High Middle Ages* (forthcoming), exploring conceptual machines in medieval intellectual culture. He has co-edited volumes like *Medieval Thought Experiments* (Brepols, 2018) and *The Roman de la rose and Thirteenth-Century Thought* (Cambridge UP, 2020). His recent articles analyze topics ranging from ekphrasis in twelfth-century romances to the role of ‘ingenium’ in medieval cognition.

Morton’s work bridges literary analysis with interdisciplinary approaches to medieval science, technology, and philosophy. His current projects explore how medieval literature functioned as a conceptual framework for understanding human-machine relationships and the more-than-human world.

He has been affiliated with Tulane since 2019 and previously worked as a secondary school teacher in London, holding a PGCE from the Institute of Education. His educational background includes a BA (Hons) and M.St. from Oxford, alongside extensive postdoctoral research experience.
