Jonathan Mercantini serves as Acting Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Associate Professor in the Department of History at Kean University, where he has taught since 2007 after prior appointments at Princeton University, University of Miami, and Canisius College.
He holds a Ph.D. in American History from Emory University and teaches courses including American Revolution, Civil War and Reconstruction, Pirates and the Atlantic World, and New Jersey History.
His research centers on American colonial and revolutionary history, with deep expertise in South Carolina and New Jersey political culture, slavery, and Atlantic World dynamics. Current projects include the NEH-funded 'Make History@Kean: William Livingston’s World,' exploring 18th-century transatlantic connections through digital public history initiatives.
Publications reveal consistent focus on constitutional development, taxation crises, and enslaved communities, demonstrating interdisciplinary approaches bridging political, social, and cultural history across regional and national contexts.
Mercantini has earned recognition for public scholarship through Emmy nominations and academic honors, supported by sustained external funding for historical research.
