Jonathan Master is an Associate Professor of Classics at Emory University, where he has served since 2007. He concurrently directs the Emory College Language Center and holds affiliate status in the Department of History. His research focuses on imperial Latin prose, Roman historiography, and Senecan philosophy, with a recent emphasis on Seneca’s views of historiography. He earned his BA in Classics and History from Columbia University (2001) and his PhD from Princeton University (2007). His book Provincial Soldiers and Imperial Instability in the Histories of Tacitus (2016) analyzes Tacitus’ portrayal of provincial soldiers as drivers of imperial instability.

Master advises numerous undergraduate and graduate students, including directing senior theses and serving on dissertation committees. He has also mentored Mellon-Mays fellows and SIRE researchers.
