Jonathan Louis Dent is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Hampshire College. As an actor, writer, and director, he focuses on storytelling as a vehicle for liberation, particularly through Black radical performance traditions. He is a member of the NYC-based Society theatre ensemble and has taught courses on acting, directing, playwriting, and the intersection of performance with spirituality and social justice.
- B.A. in Africana Studies and Theatre Arts from Brown University
- M.F.A. in Graduate Acting from NYU Tisch School of Arts
His research explores the interplay of theatre, ritual, and astrology in cultural transformation, with a focus on marginalized voices. Courses like "Rehearsing Liberation" and "Black Storytelling and Performance" reflect his commitment to using theatre for systemic critique and envisioning alternative futures.
He received the Overall Excellence Award at the New York City International Fringe Festival for his play The Broken Record, which he wrote, acted in, and co-produced.
In addition to his academic work, Dent practices as a Professional Astrologer and Numerologist, and is an aborisa in the Ifa Isese spiritual tradition. His courses emphasize embodied practice, critical theory, and collaborative creation.
