Jonathan Lorie serves as Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader in Creative Writing (Nature and Travel Writing) at Bath Spa University's School of Writing, Publishing and the Humanities, based at Corsham Court campus. He holds an MA and BA in English Literature from the University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Specializing in travel writing, global culture, and the arts, Lorie has been a professional travel writer since 1998, including seven years as a travel magazine editor before transitioning to freelance work for major UK publications including National Geographic Traveller, Conde Nast Traveller, The Times, The Telegraph, and The Guardian. He has taught travel writing since 2004, leading courses across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
His influential book The Travel Writer's Way (Bradt, 2019) has become the standard text for aspiring travel writers. Lorie regularly judges prestigious travel writing awards including the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award, the Dolman Prize, and the Edward Stanford/Bradt New Travel Writer of the Year award. As a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, he bridges academic and professional travel writing communities.
Lorie's recent publications reveal his evolving focus on cultural heritage, historical narratives, and contemporary travel challenges, with pieces ranging from Scandinavian Viking history to Basque political reconciliation and Parisian literary landscapes. His writing demonstrates how travel writing continues to adapt to modern concerns while maintaining its core focus on human connection across cultural boundaries.
