Jonathan Levin is The President and Bing Presidential Professor at Stanford University, holding dual roles as Professor of Economics at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economics Research. His academic career began in 2000 as an economics faculty member, followed by leadership roles including chair of Stanford's Economics Department and Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Business (2016–2024). Levin’s research focuses on microeconomics, industrial organization, and market design, with notable contributions to healthcare competition, e-commerce, and public policy.
Education: PhD in Economics (MIT, 1999), MPhil in Economics (Oxford, 1996), BA/BS in English and Mathematics (Stanford, 1994).
Research interests span incentive contracts, auctions, healthcare markets, and the economics of technology. He designed the pneumococcal vaccine Advance Market Commitment and advised on FCC spectrum auctions. Awards include the John Bates Clark Medal (2011) and Guggenheim Fellowship (2014).
Levin expanded the GSB’s global reach through online programs like LEAD and initiatives in healthcare and technology. He emphasizes diversity, inclusion, and interdisciplinary collaboration. His leadership includes roles on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and as a trustee of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
