Dr. Leventhal's research focuses on onco-dermatology, particularly dermatologic toxicities associated with cancer treatments including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, and stem cell transplantation. His work examines cutaneous immune-related adverse events from immune checkpoint inhibitors, drug eruptions, and melanoma. He has published extensively on managing skin, hair, and nail changes in cancer patients, with numerous publications in high-impact dermatology journals.
His 15 most recent publications demonstrate a clear research trajectory focused on the intersection of dermatology and oncology, with particular emphasis on immune checkpoint inhibitor-related skin toxicities, management of cutaneous reactions to cancer therapy, and quality of life implications for oncology patients with dermatologic complications. His work spans clinical trials, retrospective analyses, case reports, and literature reviews that collectively advance the field of onco-dermatology.

- Hugh L. Dwyer Memorial Fund Award for Clinical Excellence (Yale School of Medicine, 2015)
As Director of the Dermatology Residency Program, Dr. Leventhal mentors the next generation of dermatologists and leaders in medicine. He is Principal Investigator of several clinical trials investigating novel treatments for cutaneous reactions to cancer therapy. His clinical practice bridges general dermatology with specialized onco-dermatology care, allowing him to address both routine skin conditions and complex dermatologic issues arising from cancer treatments.
Dr. Leventhal leads the Onco-Dermatology Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital, which focuses on managing skin, hair, and nail conditions that result from cancer or its treatments. His work ensures patients can continue potentially life-saving cancer treatments by addressing dermatologic complications that might otherwise force treatment discontinuation. He collaborates extensively with colleagues in the Yale Cancer Center and Yale Center for Immuno-Oncology to provide comprehensive care for cancer patients with dermatologic manifestations.
