Dr. Jonathan Ilan is a Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Criminology at University College Dublin's Sutherland School of Law and Programme Director of the BSc Criminology with Psychology. Previously at City, University of London, he specializes in cultural criminology with focus on street cultures, youth subcultures, and urban marginality.
His research examines intersections between crime, culture, and digital media through ethnographic approaches. Key areas include drill rap music and censorship, radicalization pathways, policing marginal communities, and the commodification of street culture in media.
Publications analyze how street cultural capital operates in liquid modernity, the crime-terror nexus in radicalization, and the political significance of subcultural practices. His monograph develops a theoretical framework for understanding street culture's relationship with poverty and crime.
He serves on editorial boards of criminology journals and teaches courses on crime-media relationships, cultural criminology, and research methods.
