Jonathan H Ebel

Jonathan H Ebel is a Professor in the Department of Religion at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (2004) and a B.A. from Harvard University (1993). His research focuses on U.S. religious history, particularly intersections of religion with war, violence, and economic hardship. Notable works include From Dust They Came (2023), G.I. Messiahs (2015), and Faith in the Fight (2010). He has received prestigious awards such as the Guggenheim Fellowship (2017-2018) and served as President of the American Society of Church History (2023).

Teaching includes courses like REL 236 (Religion, Violence, and America) and REL 510 (Graduate Introduction to Religious Studies). Current projects explore a religious history of American warfare through five weapons. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary societal issues.
