Jonathan Garlick is a Professor at Tufts University with appointments across multiple schools: School of Dental Medicine (Diagnostic Sciences - Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology), School of Medicine (Developmental Molecular and Chemical Biology), and School of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering). He serves as Director of Science Communications at the Tufts Clinical Translational Sciences Institute and is a member of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Biology).
- Education: Doctor of Philosophy (SUNY Stony Brook, 1993), Doctorate of Dental Surgery (SUNY Stony Brook, 1985), Bachelor of Arts (Hebrew University, 1976)
His NIH-funded research focuses on stem cell-based tissue engineering for oral health, cancer, scleroderma, and diabetes complications. He develops 3D skin-equivalent models to study fibrosis, wound healing, and inflammatory responses. His work bridges biomedical innovation with civic science, emphasizing public dialogue on polarizing science issues.
Recent publications highlight advancements in:
- 3D tissue modeling for fibrosis and scleroderma
- Gene editing in epidermolysis bullosa
- Exosome-mediated immune activation in autoimmune diseases
- Personalized scaffolds for diabetic ulcers
Scientific honors include:
- SUNY Distinguished Alumnus Award
- President and Chancellor’s Award (Tufts)
- Monticello High School Hall of Distinction
