Jonathan D.S. Witt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo and serves as an Undergrad Advisor for Environmental Science and Ecology. His research integrates molecular markers to explore ecological and evolutionary questions in aquatic organisms.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Biology (2004), University of Guelph
- M.Sc. in Biology (1998), University of Guelph
- B.Sc. in Aquatic Sciences (1994), University of Guelph
Research focuses on molecular and morphological evolution, conservation, toxicology, and species boundary diagnosis using population and comparative approaches. His recent work examines metal toxicity in cryptic species and phylogeography of freshwater invertebrates.
Scientific Awards:
- Excellence in Science Teaching Award (ESTA), 2011
- Jack Carlson Teaching Award, 2009
He has taught courses such as BIOL 312 (The Natural History of Aquatic Organisms), BIOL 359 (Evolution 1: Mechanisms), and BIOL 479 (Population Genetics and Evolution) since 2020, with a focus on evolutionary mechanisms and aquatic biodiversity.
