Rodger Gwiazdowski is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, affiliated with the Department of Environmental Conservation. His research spans insect conservation, molecular systematics, and biodiversity informatics, with a focus on cryptic species discovery and conservation strategies for endangered insects like tiger beetles.
- Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology & Entomology (joint degree) from University of Massachusetts Amherst (2011)
- B.S. from Stockton University, New Jersey
- Postdoctoral Fellow at Hanner Lab and Hebert Lab, University of Guelph/Biodiversity Institute of Ontario
His work integrates molecular tools (DNA barcoding, phylogenetics) with ecological and conservation practices, particularly for Coleoptera and Hemiptera. He has developed high-throughput DNA reference libraries for species identification and contributed to combating seafood fraud. Current projects include serving as Principal Investigator for tiger beetle recovery under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Rodger’s 15 most recent publications highlight his expertise in DNA barcoding, phylogeography, and insect biodiversity. Key themes include cryptic species detection, mitogenome analysis, parasitoid community studies, and invasive species management. These works span journals covering entomology, genomics, and conservation biology.
He consults on innovative conservation projects with Federal and state governments, leveraging his background in both captive rearing and molecular systematics. His laboratory work includes collaborations with the Hanner Lab (University of Guelph) and Hebert Lab (Biodiversity Institute of Ontario).
