Jonathan Chappell is a Lecturer at the University of Cumbria's Brampton Road campus, teaching photography and media craft modules. With nearly 40 years of experience as a freelance TV camera operator and Director of Photography, he has completed over 1,600 projects across 83 countries, specializing in adventure and nature documentaries. He currently researches medium format photography using the Zenza Bronica SQ-A and coastal marine environments with the Laowa 24mm probe lens. His teaching focuses on practical skills like 35mm film, darkroom printing, and video editing, emphasizing hands-on learning. He advises students to engage fully with sessions and develop independent study habits. Beyond academia, he continues freelance work, maintaining industry connections to inform his teaching.
Professional highlights include filming for Ray Mears, David Jason, and Robson Green, as well as piloting achievements like a 2-month circumnavigation of Australia. His goal is to expand Wildlife Media programs to a Masters level.
