Jonathan Challoner is an Assistant Professor and holds the Babs Asper Professorship of Jazz Performance at the Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba. He serves as Director of the University of Manitoba Jazz Orchestra and teaches jazz trumpet. He holds a BMus in Contemporary Music from Humber College and an MMus in Jazz from The Juilliard School.
His research focuses on jazz trumpet pedagogy, documenting its historical evolution. As an active performer, he specializes in modern/traditional jazz, lead trumpet, salsa, musical theater, and pop, collaborating with artists like Bobby Sanabria, Miho Hazama, and Vince Giordano at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland.
Major awards include:
