Jonathan C. Carlson is a Professor of Law and International Studies at the University of Iowa College of Law, holding the Victor & Carol Alvarez Fellowship in Law. He previously clerked for Judge Alvin B. Rubin of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, practiced law in Washington, DC, and taught as an adjunct professor at Catholic University of America. His expertise spans International Trade, Commercial Law, International Environmental Law, and Climate Change Law. He has held the Fulbright/FLAD Distinguished Chair in Lisbon (2006) and currently advises the UI Center for the Health Effects of Environmental Contamination.

His research focuses on global environmental governance, particularly climate change and water resource management. Notable works include International Environmental Law and World Order (co-authored) and analyses of geoengineering governance.
