Dr Jonathan Brant serves as Dean for Research and Culture at Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford, and directs the Renaissance Project. He is an Associate Fellow of the Oxford Character Project, having previously served as its Founding Director from 2014 to 2023. His academic work bridges theology, ethics, and the arts.
Education: DPhil in Theology (Trinity College, Oxford, 2006–2008), MPhil in Theology (Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, 2004–2006), MA in Theological Education (King’s College London, 2001–2002).
Research focuses on theology of culture (e.g., film, literature, Paul Tillich’s thought) and moral formation. Key interests include the intersection of virtue ethics with university leadership, and the theological interpretation of contemporary cinema.
Recent publications include Cultivating Virtue in the University (OUP, 2022) and Paul Tillich and the Possibility of Revelation through Film (OUP, 2012). His work explores how universities can foster ethical leadership and integrate character development into academic life.
He leads initiatives like the Oxford Global Leadership Initiative, empirically studying character development in postgraduates. Collaborates across disciplines to address moral education in higher education.
