Dr Jonathan Benn is Associate Professor in Healthcare Quality and Safety at the School of Psychology, University of Leeds, and Theme Lead for Digital Innovation within the NIHR Yorkshire & Humber Patient Safety Translational Research Centre. His work bridges behavioural and social sciences with healthcare delivery, focusing on improving clinical systems and patient safety.

His research interests lie at the intersection of organisational psychology, human factors, and healthcare systems. He investigates how digital innovations, audit and feedback mechanisms, and organisational interventions can enhance patient safety and quality of care. His work spans diverse clinical settings including perioperative care, medication safety, ambulance services, and hospital risk management. He emphasizes sociotechnical evaluation of digital tools and the implementation of evidence-based practices to reduce harmful variations in care.
Jonathan has extensive experience in improvement and implementation science, and he actively contributes to education in these domains. He supervises student projects in applied psychology and research methods, focusing on individual, team, and organisational behaviour in healthcare workplaces.
He has secured research funding as Principal Investigator from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Services and Delivery Research (HS&DR), NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC), and The Health Foundation. His collaborative work extends through the NIHR Patient Safety Translational Research Centre, particularly in Safe Use of Medicines, Digital Innovation, and Workforce Engagement and Wellbeing.
Jonathan serves as Academic Advisor to the board of the YHAHSN Improvement Academy at the Bradford Institute for Health Research, reinforcing his national contribution to healthcare improvement. He leads key modules in Work Psychology and Advanced Research Issues in Psychology, demonstrating strong commitment to pedagogy and research training.
