Dr. Bricker specializes in developing innovative behavioral interventions using high-reach technologies such as chatbots, smartphone apps, websites, and telehealth. His research focuses on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which encourages acceptance of urges (e.g., smoking cravings or weight-loss barriers) rather than suppression. Clinical trials have demonstrated ACT’s efficacy, with outcomes surpassing traditional cognitive behavioral therapy. He envisions expanding ACT’s applications to address alcohol abuse, obesity, and other behaviors linked to cancer and chronic disease risks.
Dr. Bricker’s work is supported by over $35 million in NIH funding, including grants for projects like:
- iCanQuit app trials for Hispanic adults
- AI chatbots for Indigenous communities
- Telehealth coaching for weight loss
- Conversational agents for smoking cessation
