Dr. Agensky’s research lies at the intersection of interpretive international relations, postcolonial and African studies, and social and political theory. His work explores the role of religion in global politics, the sociology of humanitarianism and development, and the influence of non-state actors in international crises. With a regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa—particularly South Sudan—he investigates historical and contemporary dynamics of Christian humanitarianism, advocacy, and global governance. His in-progress book examines Christian groups from the global North during Sudan’s civil war and South Sudan’s independence.
His scholarly output spans journals such as European Journal of International Relations, Global Society, and Globalisations, with a thematic emphasis on religion, security, postcolonial agency, and moral economies of aid. His publications reflect a deep engagement with historical sociology, critical IR theory, and decolonial perspectives.
Dr. Agensky has conducted fieldwork in the United States, United Kingdom, Kenya, and South Sudan, and has lived and worked in Toronto, Cambridge, London, and Washington, D.C. He teaches courses including International Relations, International Peace, Postcolonial Politics, and Global Humanitarianism.
He leads the War and Peace Studies program and is deeply involved in interdisciplinary initiatives on African studies and humanitarianism at Ohio University.
