Jonatan Echebarria Fernandez

Dr Jonatan Echebarria Fernandez is an Honorary Lecturer at The City Law School, City, University of London. He previously held academic positions as Associate Professor of Law at BI Norwegian Business School and Lecturer in Law at City. His expertise lies in Maritime Law, Commercial Law, European Union Law, and Environmental Law, with a strong international research and teaching background across institutions in Denmark, Spain, Norway, and the UK.

His educational background includes a PhD in Law from Copenhagen Business School (2019), two LLMs in EU Law and Shipping Law from Spanish universities, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Deusto. He has pursued advanced courses at Harvard, Columbia, the College of Europe, and the Hague Academy, and holds a PG Cert in Academic Practice and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Dr Echebarria Fernandez's research focuses on maritime disputes, conflict of laws, and the legal impacts of marine pollution, especially on vulnerable coastal communities. His recent publications analyze jurisdiction in shipping contracts, Brexit’s effect on maritime law, and the EU’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. His forthcoming book with Routledge examines jurisdiction and arbitration in sea carriage contracts.

His publications span journals such as the Journal of Maritime Law and Commerce, European Papers, and Cuadernos de Derecho Transnacional, as well as book chapters with Routledge. The works reflect a clear trend toward EU regulatory frameworks, maritime liability, and crisis-related legal adaptations, particularly in transport and trade law.
