Dr. Jonas von Hoffmann is a Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies in Germany, and a Visiting Professor at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) in Mexico. His research focuses on drug policy, cannabis legalization, and policy processes in Latin America. He holds a DPhil in Politics from the University of Oxford, an MPhil in Latin American Studies from Oxford, and a BA in Politics, Psychology, and Sociology from the University of Cambridge.
His recent work examines cannabis regulation in Mexico, the failure of cannabis reform in Chile, and the historical context of Uruguay’s landmark marijuana legalization. He has contributed to policy briefs and media commentary on U.S.-Mexico relations under Trump, transnational drug trafficking, and Latin America’s geopolitical role.
Dr. von Hoffmann organized expert workshops on drug trafficking dynamics and participated in public lectures analyzing Trump’s impact on Mexico. His research emphasizes qualitative methods and the intersection of morality, law, and policy in Latin America.
