Jonas Ardö is a Professor in the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science at Lund University's Faculty of Science. He serves as a Principal Investigator for BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate) and actively teaches courses NGEK01 and NGEN34 while supervising master's and PhD students.
His research focuses on three primary areas:
- Carbon cycle studies in Africa, conducting micro-meteorology and eddy covariance measurements of CO2 and H2O fluxes in Sudan and Senegal to understand carbon processes in semiarid environments
- PERENNIAL crops research in Sweden, investigating the transition from annual to perennial crops through micrometeorological measurements in Alnarp
- Assessment of GPP, NPP and phenology for Europe at 10-m resolution using Sentinel-2 data within the HRVPP-2 project
His recent publications demonstrate expertise in climate science and remote sensing, with emphasis on carbon flux measurements, ecosystem services, and satellite data applications for environmental monitoring. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action, life on land, and responsible consumption.
Professor Ardö supervises multiple PhD students through projects including 'Climate Mitigation Potential of Perennial Crops in Agriculture' and 'Modelling grasslands and perennial crops,' while leading significant research initiatives with funding through 2028.
He manages critical research infrastructure including meteorological stations in Sudan (Demokeya) and Senegal (Dahra), supporting international field research on carbon cycle dynamics in African semiarid environments.
