Jon Weinbren

Jon Weinbren is Programme Director for the MA in Film, Animation and Digital Arts at the University of Surrey, where he is also a key member of the Digital Media Arts department. He founded and directs the Centre for Creative Arts and Technologies, fostering interdisciplinary research and practice. Prior to Surrey, he established the Games Department at the National Film and Television School, blending academic leadership with extensive industry experience in film, animation, games, and interactive media.

His research interests span digital acting, emotion synthesis in animated characters, virtual cinematography, interactive narrative, and the convergence of film, theatre, and games. He explores how narrative, performance, and technology intersect, particularly in emergent and participatory forms. His work is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing from cognitive science, performance theory, and digital design.

The recent publications reflect a strong focus on virtual performance, narrative systems, and the emotional intelligence of digital characters. Themes of interactivity, embodiment, and cross-platform storytelling recur across his work, indicating a deep engagement with the evolving landscape of digital arts and storytelling technologies.
