Dr Jon Thompson is a Senior Lecturer at York St John University's School of Science, Technology and Health since 2017. With 28 years of NHS and private clinical experience specializing in musculoskeletal (MSK) practice, he held roles as an Extended Scope Practitioner and Consultant Physiotherapist. His expertise includes MSK injection therapy and ultrasound-guided procedures. Thompson completed a 2018 PhD exploring decision-making processes between MSK practitioners and patients. His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate physiotherapy programs, leading modules in MSK, Exercise Rehabilitation, and Service Development. He also serves as admissions tutor for the BHSc programme.
Research interests include advanced clinical practice roles, tendinopathy management, and soft tissue knee injuries. Prior research includes an MRC-funded study on shoulder diagnostic test accuracy (2004–2006) and an MSc on lower limb tendinopathy (2006). Professional memberships include the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Health and Care Professions Council, and Advanced Practice Physiotherapy Network.
His publications address clinical decision-making frameworks, MSK injection techniques, and service development. Thompson actively participates in national conferences, presenting on topics like ESP practice and ultrasound-guided interventions. His work bridges clinical expertise with academic contributions in musculoskeletal healthcare.
