Dr. Jon Shiach is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the Manchester Metropolitan University, where he has been a member of the Department of Computing and Mathematics since 2005. His academic journey began with a BSc (Hons) in Applicable Mathematics with Business Mathematics (2001), followed by a PhD in Mathematics (2008) focused on Computational Fluid Dynamics. His teaching spans Linear Algebra, Python/MATLAB Programming, Numerical Methods for ODEs/PDEs, and Computer Graphics for game development and digital media. He has held leadership roles such as Programme Leader for BSc Mathematics and department Student Experience Lead.
- Education: PhD (2008), PGC-AP (2009), BSc (2001)
- Professional Affiliations: Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (FIMA)
His research focuses on computational fluid dynamics, particularly finite-volume and meshless methods for solving depth-integrated equations like the Shallow Water Equations and Boussinesq models to simulate wave run-up and overtopping on coastal structures. His recent outreach work includes interactive Python-based demonstrations on fractals, chaos theory, and the mathematics of music, hosted via Jupyter notebooks.
Key research outputs include:
- Development of high-order Godunov-type schemes for Boussinesq equations (2009)
- Validation of shallow water models for violent wave overtopping (2004)
- Applications of depth-integrated methods in coastal engineering (2005)
