Jon May is a Professor in Psychology at the University of Plymouth's School of Psychology, part of the Faculty of Health. His research focuses on craving mechanisms, mental imagery applications in health behaviors, and motivational interventions. He has supervised numerous PhD and MPhil students in areas like cognitive modeling, causal reasoning, and creativity in dance.
Key research contributions include the Elaborated Intrusion Theory of Desire, Functional Imagery Training (FIT) for addiction and motivation, and studies on environmental influences on health behaviors. He has collaborated on interdisciplinary projects involving sports psychology, nursing education, and digital health innovation. His work spans addiction treatment, diabetes self-care, and improving patient experiences through virtual reality.
Jon has been principal supervisor for over 17 research degrees, including EU Marie-Curie Fellowships and Leverhulme Trust-funded projects. He teaches Cognitive Psychology, Cognition and Emotion, and Applied Psychology, emphasizing practical applications of theory.
Recent research highlights include testing FIT for anxiety management, exploring nature's impact on health risks, and developing measures like the Alcohol Craving Experience Questionnaire. His interventions aim to bridge cognitive psychology with real-world health challenges.
