Jon Freeman is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Columbia University and director of the Social Cognitive & Neural Sciences Lab. His research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying social perception, including stereotyping, emotion recognition, and decision-making. He employs techniques like fMRI, EEG, and computational modeling to bridge social psychology, neuroscience, and vision science.
Freeman earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from Tufts University in 2012. His advocacy work addresses LGBTQ+ equity in STEM, pushing for systemic inclusion through data-driven policy changes. He has received prestigious awards, including the NSF CAREER Award and the APS Janet T. Spence Award.
His lab investigates how social categories and biases shape visual perception, with recent work on multiracial categorization and facial impression dynamics. He teaches courses on social neuroscience and advises on national initiatives to improve LGBTQ+ representation in academic and professional settings.
