Dr. Johny Daniel is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at Durham University and a Fellow of the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing. His research focuses on teacher professional development, inclusive education, and evidence-based reading interventions for students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia. He leads multiple grants including projects on open educational resources for primary students with reading disabilities, cross-national teacher training studies, and analysis of special educational needs (SEN) identification processes. Dr. Daniel holds a Ph.D. in Special Education from The University of Texas at Austin and dual M.Ed. degrees from Vanderbilt University and UT Austin.
His editorial roles include Associate Editor for Frontiers in Education, Academic Editor for PLOS One, and Consulting Editor for Journal of Learning Disabilities. Key projects include developing dyslexia assessment frameworks and investigating gender disparities in SEN identification. Dr. Daniel collaborates globally with researchers in India, England, and Taiwan to enhance early reading instruction strategies.
Recent work includes a comparative study of preservice teachers’ knowledge in India and England, longitudinal studies on deaf students’ academic achievement, and analysis of anxiety management in reading interventions. He supervises three doctoral students and advocates for specialist teachers in mainstream classrooms to address educational inequities faced by students with disabilities.
