Johnna M. Frierson is an Assistant Professor of the Practice of Medical Education at Duke University's School of Medicine. Her roles include Associate Dean of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for the Basic Sciences (2022-present) and previously Assistant Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Diversity and Inclusion (2019-2022). She holds a PhD in Microbiology & Immunology from Vanderbilt University (2012).
Her research focuses on addressing challenges at the intersection of STEM education, healthcare equity, and underrepresented groups. She leads initiatives like the Duke Preparing Research Scholars in Biomedical Sciences program and the REU Site for Grand Challenges in Engineering, aimed at increasing diversity in STEM fields.
Notable recognitions include being named one of Cell Mentor's 1,000 Inspiring Black Scientists in 2020 and Mentor of the Month by the National Research Mentor Network in 2019. Her work emphasizes fostering inclusive environments and advancing underrepresented trainees' success.
