John Fabian Witt is the Allen H. Duffy Class of 1960 Professor at Yale Law School and a Professor of History at Yale University. His research focuses on American legal history, the laws of war, and tort law. Witt holds B.A., J.D., and Ph.D. degrees from Yale and has authored influential books such as Lincoln’s Code: The Laws of War in American History (Bancroft Prize winner) and American Contagions: Epidemics and the Law. He has held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and served as Head of College at Yale’s Davenport College. Witt teaches courses on legal history, the law of war, and torts, and has contributed to public legal education through initiatives like the Warrior-Scholar Project and the Gilder-Lehrman Institute.
