John Wear, Ph.D. serves as Associate Professor of Biology and Director Emeritus of the Center for the Environment at Catawba College. He joined Catawba College in 1993 and founded the Center for the Environment, leading it for nearly 26 years before stepping down as Director in 2022.
Dr. Wear's research focuses on aquatic ecology, water quality assessment, and sustainable living practices. His work integrates field research with practical environmental applications, emphasizing hands-on learning opportunities for students. He has been instrumental in developing community-based environmental initiatives that connect academic work with real-world sustainability challenges.
As founding director of the Center for the Environment, Wear established Catawba College's national reputation in environmental education. He has engaged students in all aspects of the Center's work, providing valuable opportunities to develop skills in collaboration, communication and leadership. His leadership spanned numerous environmental initiatives including sustainable development, watershed protection, land conservation, green building practices, air quality improvement, and community outreach programs.
Dr. Wear has served on the executive committee of regional planning efforts, co-chaired the state's first county-endorsed Sustainable Community Development Commission, provided oversight for one of the first green academic buildings in the Southeast, and contributed to the creation of an annual statewide watershed conference. He also provided thought leadership for the national TV series 'Simple Living with Wanda Urbanska' and oversaw the Center's National Summit for High School Students and NC Green Schools program.
