John Wain is Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of East Anglia, where he leads translational research in gastrointestinal infections and diagnostic microbiology. He serves as Chief Scientific Officer and Director for Discuva and Bactevo Ltd., and is founding editor of the Journal of Infection in Developing Countries. His work focuses on next-generation sequencing (NGS) applications for molecular epidemiology, antibiotic resistance prediction, and pathogen identification in clinical settings.
- 1976-79: B.Sc. in Biological Sciences, Portsmouth Polytechnic
- 1991-92: M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology (Parasitology), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
- 1996-2000: Ph.D. on antimicrobial resistance in S. typhi, University of Birmingham
Wain is an international authority on Salmonella and antibiotic resistance, with over 30 years of experience. His research integrates NGS, bioinformatics, and nucleic acid extraction techniques to improve infectious disease diagnostics. Collaborations with The Earlham Institute and institutions in India, China, South Africa, and Ethiopia highlight his commitment to global health initiatives.
His recent publications demonstrate trends in bacterial genomics, including plasmid analysis, transposon mutagenesis, and NGS implementation for outbreak management. Awards include the American Society for Microbiology's Young Microbiologist of the Year (1999).
Wain supervises PhD, MSc, and undergraduate students while supporting problem-based learning. His projects include grants from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, South African Medical Research Council, and partnerships with Discuva Ltd.
