John W. Hall is the Ambrose-Hesseltine Professor of U.S. Military History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of History (College of Letters and Science). A retired U.S. Army Reserve colonel, he previously served as a historian for institutions including West Point and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Education: Ph.D., M.A. (University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill); B.S. (U.S. Military Academy).
Research Interests: Focuses on military history with emphases on Native American-European colonial conflicts, Revolutionary Era military strategies, and 'small wars' involving irregular forces. Current project: military history of Indian Removal in the southeastern U.S.
Teaching & Grants: Teaches courses like 'American Military History' and 'The History of War in Film.' Received Vilas Associate fellowship (2011-2012) and multiple teaching awards including the 2015 Distinguished Faculty Award.
