John V. Brown Jr. is Professor of the Practice of Music and Vice Provost for the Arts at Duke University, affiliated with Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. A Grammy- and Emmy-nominated bassist, he has performed for presidential events and global venues with artists like Wynton Marsalis and Delfeayo Marsalis. Leads Duke Jazz Program and university-wide arts initiatives.
Artistic focus includes big band leadership, jazz composition, and pedagogical innovation. Directs ensembles exploring traditional and contemporary jazz repertoire.
Administratively secured major grants including Duke Endowment's TDE Arts Phase 2 ($2022-2026) and Biddle Foundation funding for public art installations. Current projects emphasize community engagement through Jazz Vespers and cross-disciplinary collaborations.
Recordings include 'Quiet Time' (2013) and collaborative albums. Teaches ensemble performance and interdisciplinary arts courses. Formerly served as Core Faculty in Innovation & Entrepreneurship.
