His research focuses on 19th-century British literature (Romantic and Victorian eras), intersections of Christian faith and cultural difference, post-colonial literature, and the works of Japanese novelist Endō Shūsaku. He has been recognized for his scholarship, including the Lionel Basney Award (2010) for an article analyzing Endō’s work. Netland’s teaching spans Romantic poetry, Victorian fiction, theological aesthetics, and global literature.
