John T. Horan, M.D., M.P.H., is a Professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and a member of the Golisano Children’s Hospital Pediatric Hematology-Oncology team. He specializes in blood and marrow transplantation for leukemia, sickle cell disease, and bone marrow failure syndromes, with a focus on improving post-transplant outcomes. Dr. Horan is a founding member of the Sickle Cell Transplant Advocacy and Research Alliance (STAR) and collaborates with the Children’s Oncology Group.
His research spans acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), HLA matching, and immunological complications in pediatric hematopoietic cell transplantation. He has contributed to multicenter clinical trials evaluating abatacept and other therapies for GVHD prophylaxis, particularly in sickle cell disease and acute myeloid leukemia. Dr. Horan’s work also addresses racial disparities in transplant outcomes and the role of T-cell activation in complications like GVHD.
Dr. Horan completed his M.D. at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, a Masters in Public Health at the University of Rochester, and fellowships in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation at URMC and Children’s National Health Center. He has held positions at Emory University, Columbia University Medical Center, and Boston Children’s Hospital/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute prior to his current faculty role.
