John Stogner

Dr. John Stogner is a Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), affiliated with the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences. He holds an additional appointment as an Assistant Professor of Public Health Sciences. His research focuses on substance use policy, biosocial criminology, and the interplay between health and deviance, with particular emphasis on novel psychoactive drugs (e.g., synthetic cannabinoids, cathinones) and LGBTQ+ substance use patterns. He has authored/co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles and books, including Emerging Trends in Drug Use and Distribution and the upcoming second edition of Akers’ Drugs, Alcohol, and Society.

Education: Ph.D. (2011) in Criminology from the University of Florida; M.S. (2007) and B.S. (2001) in Criminal Justice and Zoology/Psychology from UNC Charlotte and NC State University, respectively. He also holds an MPH from UNC Chapel Hill.

Research interests include: synthetic drug regulation, health strain theory, and the impact of social structures on substance use. Recent work examines SC use among veterans, LGBTQ communities, and adolescents. His awards include recognition as the Southern Criminal Justice Association’s 2010 Outstanding Graduate Student and his role as Past President of the Association.

Teaching includes courses on criminological theory, drug analytics, and research methods. He has mentored nine students in publishing their first academic work. Professional roles include membership in the Faculty Council and service on the Executive Board of the Southern Criminal Justice Association.

Key publications highlight SC use correlates, genetic influences on substance use, and policy implications of novel drug trends. Ongoing projects explore online peer influence on substance use and the mental health of police during crises.
