John Sibert is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Texas at Dallas, within the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He has been a faculty member since 2000, initially as Assistant Professor and promoted to Associate Professor in 2006. His work bridges cutting-edge chemical research and transformative science education.
Educational Background:
- B.S. in Chemistry, University of South Florida (1986)
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, The University of Texas at Austin (1991)
- NIH Postdoctoral Fellow, Northwestern University (1995)
Dr. Sibert's research focuses on the synthesis and coordination chemistry of novel macrocyclic receptors, including the development of “Wurster's Crowns”—redox-active systems with applications in catalysis, cancer therapy, and materials science. His work spans inorganic, organic, supramolecular, and bioinorganic chemistry, emphasizing host-guest interactions and functional molecular design. He holds two U.S. patents on Wurster's Crown ligands.
His recent publications reflect a dual commitment to chemical innovation and pedagogical excellence. The research articles highlight his expertise in redox-active receptors and selective metal ion binding, while his educational works, such as The Little Orange Book series and lab manuals, demonstrate leadership in science teaching reform and student-centered learning.
Scientific and Teaching Awards:
- Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award (2015)
- Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award (2011)
- President's Outstanding Teaching Award (2010)
- Advisor of the Year at UT Dallas (2005, 2006, 2008)
- Teacher of the Year, School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (2004, 2019)
- Founding Fellow, UT System Academy of Distinguished Teachers (2013)
- STAR Award for PLTL Program (2011)
- Best Paper Award, ASEE Annual Conference (2015)
Dr. Sibert is a dedicated mentor and educational leader. He founded the Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) program at UT Dallas, co-directed the GEMS program, and has advised numerous students through research and outreach. He has secured grants and led initiatives focused on improving STEM transfer pathways and student retention. His public engagement includes media appearances as “Dr. Slime,” public lectures, and science advising for local news channels.
He is affiliated with the UT System Academy of Distinguished Teachers, where he served as Past President (2015–2017), and has been recognized in national directories including Who's Who in American Teachers and Sciences Higher Education.
