Dr. John Schneider MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Chicago, with appointments in the Departments of Medicine and Public Health Sciences. He serves as Director of the University of Chicago Center for HIV Elimination (http://hivelimination.uchicago.edu/), leading NIH and CDC funded research on social network interventions for disease elimination in vulnerable populations. His clinical work focuses on HIV prevention, particularly for young Black men who have sex with men and transgender women at Howard Brown Health 55th clinic on Chicago's South Side.
Dr. Schneider earned his BA in Interdisciplinary Studies (Public Health, Anthropology and Demography) from the University of California, Berkeley in 1996, followed by an MD and MPH from Tufts University in 2001. He completed Internal Medicine residency at the University of Chicago in 2004, Infectious Diseases fellowship at University of Illinois/University of Chicago in 2006, and HIV Prevention training at Tufts/Brown CFAR in 2008.
His research focuses on network epidemiology and social network interventions for HIV elimination, particularly among marginalized populations. Dr. Schneider employs computational modeling and network analysis to understand and interrupt HIV transmission in resource-restricted settings. His work addresses critical health disparities facing Black sexual and gender minority populations, with an emphasis on developing culturally competent interventions that address structural barriers to care. He has extensive experience advancing physician-patient relationships in resource-limited contexts, including work in Southern India.
Analysis of Dr. Schneider's recent publications reveals a strong focus on using social network analysis and computational modeling to address HIV transmission and care engagement disparities. His work increasingly incorporates intersectional approaches examining how race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and criminal justice involvement compound health disparities. Recent publications show expansion into related areas including substance use disorders, opioid epidemic response, and digital health interventions, while maintaining core focus on HIV prevention and elimination strategies.

As Principal Investigator, Dr. Schneider leads multiple NIH-funded projects including R21AI182822 on Covid-19 transmission in migrant worker networks, R01DA057351 on cannabis use and PrEP care engagement, and R01MH131476 on network case management for young Black sexual minority men. He also serves as Co-Principal Investigator on numerous grants addressing HIV care, substance use, and health disparities. His research portfolio demonstrates substantial grant funding and leadership in the field of HIV prevention and health disparities research.
Dr. Schneider directs the University of Chicago Center for HIV Elimination, which focuses on implementing network interventions to eliminate HIV transmission. His team employs a multidisciplinary approach combining epidemiology, network science, implementation science, and community engagement to develop and scale effective HIV prevention strategies. His work bridges clinical care, public health implementation, and computational modeling to address complex health challenges facing vulnerable populations.
