John Scherpereel is a Professor of Political Science at James Madison University (JMU) since 2005, coordinating the Modern European Studies minor. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2003, 1998) and a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame (1997). He previously directed JMU's M.A. in Political Science program and the Semester in Florence program, and served as assistant chair of the Department of Political Science.
His research focuses on European politics, governance dynamics, gender representation, and the relationship between politics and administration. Notable works include Governing the Czech Republic and Slovakia: Between State Socialism and the European Union (2008). Recent publications address EU legitimacy, gender-balanced decision-making, and institutional turnover effects.
Teaching emphasizes European Union politics, Central/Eastern Europe, and comparative politics. Collaborations include JMU faculty, students, and alumni in cross-institutional projects.
