John Sampson is an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong’s School of Medical, Indigenous and Health Sciences, part of the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health. He holds a PhD from the University of Wollongong, a PGCE from the University of Huddersfield, and an MSc from Leeds Beckett University. His research focuses on sports medicine, exercise physiology, injury prevention, and military training physiology, with particular emphasis on injury epidemiology, athlete performance monitoring, and interprofessional education.
Key research areas include analyzing injuries in military recruits and elite athletes, optimizing training loads, and developing preventive strategies. He has secured multiple grants, including equipment grants for wearable technology and studies on breast injury prevention in women’s rugby. Sampson collaborates on projects like the Prospective Physical Performance and Resilience (P3R) study, investigating soldier readiness and training adaptations.
His work spans over 80 publications, addressing topics such as sleep patterns in recruits, omega-3 supplementation in athletes, and the burden of time-loss injuries. Sampson actively supervises PhD and MPhil students, including projects on rugby injury prevention and military training methodologies.
Teaching contributions include fostering interprofessional learning in behavioral counseling skills through collaborative initiatives. He integrates technology-enhanced learning to improve student engagement and practical skills.
