John S. Ott is a Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Portland State University, specializing in medieval European history with a focus on ecclesiastical and urban history of northern France and Flanders, hagiography, and medieval Iberia. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University (1999) and has authored numerous books and articles, including Bishops, Authority and Community in Northwestern Europe, c.1050-1150 (2015) and co-edited volumes such as Between Sword and Prayer: Warfare and Clergy in Cultural Perspective (2017). Ott has received accolades like the John Eliot Allen Outstanding Teacher Award (multiple years) and Mellon Fellowships. His research explores bishops' roles, canon law, and medieval reform movements. He teaches courses on medieval Europe, the medieval city, and saints' cults.
