John S. Munger, MD is an Associate Professor in both the Department of Medicine and Department of Cell Biology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He serves as a pulmonologist at NYU Langone Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates and as an attending physician on the pulmonary service at NYU Langone's Tisch Hospital.
Dr. Munger earned his MD from Washington University-St Louis in 1982 and completed his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at Brigham & Womens Hospital in 1991. He is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine since 1985.
His primary research interests focus on Post-acute Sequelae of COVID-19, Interstitial Lung Disease, and the molecular mechanisms of lung health and disease. Dr. Munger has made significant contributions to understanding the activation of TGF-β and its role in fibrosis, development, and immune regulation, as well as Hedgehog signaling in lung development. His work has important implications for understanding and treating pulmonary fibrosis and other respiratory conditions.
Analysis of Dr. Munger's recent publications reveals a strong focus on molecular mechanisms of lung disease, particularly the intersection of signaling pathways in lung development and fibrosis. His research spans basic science investigations of growth factors like TGFβ and Hedgehog to clinical studies of post-COVID respiratory issues and critical care medicine. This multidisciplinary approach bridges fundamental cellular biology with clinical applications in pulmonary medicine.
Dr. Munger is actively involved in medical education as the director of the Honors Program and the Internal Medicine Summer Fellowship Program for medical students at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He mentors the next generation of physicians and fosters a culture of continuous learning and improvement in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
His clinical practice at NYU Langone Pulmonary & Critical Care Associates focuses on treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, and post-COVID respiratory issues. He emphasizes patient education and proactive healthcare engagement, working collaboratively with patients to manage and improve their respiratory health.
