John Reef is an Associate Professor at the School of Music, Nazareth University, specializing in Music Theory. He teaches core courses in Music Theory and Aural Skills, as well as upper-division courses on Form and Analysis, Counterpoint, Rock Music, and Film Music.

His research focuses on the Baroque period, particularly the works of J.S. Bach, Schenkerian theory, and theories of rhythm and meter. His recent projects include a study of Bach’s energetic shaping of musical form and a pedagogical article on Harry T. Burleigh’s spiritual settings.
Dr. Reef coauthored the American Music Theory (1955–2017) annotated bibliography and assisted in preparing the award-winning The Rite of Spring at 100. His published article in Music Theory Spectrum explores phrase boundaries in Bach's fugues.
