John R. Stilgoe is the Robert and Lois Orchard Professor in the History of Landscape Development at Harvard University, holding a joint appointment in the Faculties of Arts and Science and Design. His work bridges history, cultural studies, and environmental design, with a focus on North American landscapes and their transformation through transportation, photography, and human activity.
Research interests include the historical and visual interpretation of landscapes, risk and resilience in urban environments, and the interplay between transportation infrastructure and cultural geography. He teaches courses such as Adventure and Fantasy Simulation, 1871-2036 and Modernization in the Visual United States Environment.
Stilgoe has authored influential books like What Is Landscape? and Train Time, and has received prestigious awards including the Parkman Medal and ASLA Williams Medal. His research projects include studies on cultural landscape terminology and elite influences on environmental design.
He is an avid restorer and sailor of antique boats, integrating practical engagement with historical material culture into his academic work.
