John R. Donald is a Professor at the University of Guelph's School of Engineering, with expertise in Engineering Leadership, Water Resources Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. He has over 20 years of academic experience and previously held executive roles in Ontario Colleges, including Dean and Vice-President positions. His work focuses on integrating leadership skills into engineering education and enhancing learning outcomes through innovative practices like flipped classrooms and multimedia tools.
Dr. Donald earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Water Resources) from the University of Waterloo in 1993. He also holds an M.A.Sc. and B.A.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the same institution. His professional engineering (P.Eng.) designation was obtained in 1994.
Research interests include Engineering Leadership Education, Curriculum Development, and Interdisciplinary Teaching Practices. He emphasizes reflective practice, experiential learning, and bridging technical and social sciences in engineering education. Recent publications explore leadership program diversity, sustainable leadership in complex systems, and team dynamics in engineering classrooms.
Dr. Donald has led initiatives such as the Guelph Engineering Leadership (GEL) Program (2020) and the SOE Instructional Development Multimedia Studio (2017). He served as President of the Canadian Engineering Education Association (CEEA) and organized national conferences on engineering accreditation.
